So I have an HP laptop that is a few years old: 4 gb RAM, 500 GB hard drive, and 2.40 processor, Windows 8.
For maybe a week or so now, my laptop suddenly started pressing the arrow keys randomly on its own - namely, the up arrow. I figured the key was stuck, but as many times as I took the keys apart, or even disabled the up key entirely using keytweak, it still would sometimes fly up the screen as if I were holding the key down.
I scanned my laptop with antivirus, anti-malware, and anti-spyware and it still hasn't gone away. It's even making typing this hard because my cursor keeps flying back to the beginning of the message.
It has mostly been the up arrow, and it only does it sometimes. Sometimes, if I press other arrows or fiddle with the keys, it will stop or at least pause. And it will often be doing it in some apps and not others. For example, I could have a game open where my character will be constantly running up, and I could switch to my browser and it's perfectly fine. Then, back to the game and it's flying through the menus on its own. Even if I have two browsers open or just different tabs on the same browser, one will constantly be scrolling up and the next will be perfectly fine.
I've looked around and haven't found a good solution aside from things like stuck keys or overactive mouse or viruses, but I don't know that it's any as even with no mouse it does it. I ran all my virus programs and it wasn't that, and it still does it even if I disable the up key. I have no wireless keyboard, a wireless mouse but it does it regardless of the mouse being connected or off and disconnected. It's very annoying.
Any ideas? Thank you!

Hi,
Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help in solving the issue:
Start by uninstalling the keyboard driver from Device Manager.
Once uninstalled, reboot your laptop and it should reinstall the driver automatically.
After the reboot, test the keyboard again and see if the same problem persists.
If it does, connect an external USB keyboard and see if the same problem persists.
If it works normal with a USB keyboard, you may need to do a complete factory reset with your laptop to really identify if it's a hardware or software problem.
If resetting your laptop back to factory does not solve the problem, then it's the keyboard itself that is faulty.

Thank you! I uninstalled the keyboard drivers and such as you suggested and it did not fix it. I do not have an external usb keyboard but I cleaned up my laptop and updated drivers and such, and no one thing I did seem to fix it, but it has stopped for the most part for now at least for the past couple days.

Hi, I was also facing the same problem but now it is solved. let's start:- 1. You have to buy a new external keyboard & mouse combo (wireless will be better) & then install it on your laptop 2. Then you have to follow the following steps:- First, go to device manager and then click on the keyboard. Here you will see two options:- HID keyboard device which is newly installed external keyboard and second is the standard keyboard which is the laptop's inbuilt keyboard. click on the standard keyboard and then click on uninstall. After uninstalling it will say to restart the computer but don't restart the computer Shut it down and then log in again and you will see that the inbuilt keyboard no longer works and also it doesn't type keys on its own. In case if you have to restart the computer, then all the changes will be reverted back and follow the same procedure again. It is working very fine on my laptop and I am able to type flawlessly with external keyboard. Although it is not the permanent solution but it will help you a lot. Hope your problem is also solved.

I've heard this type of issues is caused by the touchpad driver... so no matter what you do with keyboard and mouse, you need to address the touchpad driver.. the Synaptics driver is said to work everytime.
You could also update the mouse and keyboard drivers to the Microsoft Intellimouse/Intellipoint and Intellipad drivers
